Equalization's Effect on Speech

A SouND Studio Creation
As you saw in the demo, equalizing recordings of speech can reduce noise or even change what you hear being said. This can be very important in noisy environments where audibility is very important. One example is the military uses equalization on their communication devices for planes so what the pilots are saying is clearer.

For example, the picture below is of the spectrogram of the 1956 Yankees vs. Dodgers world series recording. By analyzing the recording we were able to identify what frequencies the announcers voice contained and attenuate any other frequencies.

Equalization can also be used to change the timbre (pronounced tamber like amber), or the characteristic sound of their voice. You can make someone's voice sound lower or higher. A team of researchers have also made a genderless voice assistant that sounds neither male nor female named Q. At the link below you can listen to Q and mess around with what frequency is strongest. If you move the bubble up, the voice sounds higher and female. If you move the bubble to the bottom of the screen, Q sounds male. Feel free to play around with it.
